Shoulder dystocia is a potentially serious birth complication that can lead to many problems for the baby.  This birth injury occurs when the baby’s shoulders become stuck inside the mother’s body during delivery.  Shoulder dystocia creates risks for not only the mother, but the baby as well.

There are many factors that can lead to shoulder dystocia.  According to the March of Dimes, shoulder dystocia can happen when an infant is unusually large or when the mother’s pelvic opening is too small for the baby’s shoulders to be delivered.  A woman may be at a higher risk for shoulder dystocia if she is diabetic or obese or if she has passed the baby’s due date.  Also, there is a greater probability of shoulder dystocia if the mother has delivered a baby before who suffered from shoulder dystocia.

The doctor should be able to identify if the mother is in the risk category for shoulder dystocia and take appropriate measures.  Generally, if shoulder dystocia is considered to be a significant possibility, a C-section will be scheduled to prevent birth injury.

Sometimes shoulder dystocia occurs even when the mother is not considered a high risk.  If this happens, the doctor must take immediate action.  Failing to act in a prompt manner could result in serious birth injury and even death.  If the doctor was negligent, he or she can be held responsible for the birth trauma.
