Product Liability | January 13, 2020

Vaping has become a widespread trend, particularly among teens and young crowds. With the astounding increase of e-cigarette and vaping product use comes concerning statistics. The most recent statistics reveal that American vaping-related deaths has risen to 33 nationwide. In the last 6 months alone, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has “linked vaping to 1,479 cases of a mysterious lung disease.”Over 75% of these cases were directly related to e-cigarettes with users under the age of 35. High usage of vaping has left us all concerned about the side effects of these products, and the long term damage they cause.

The Harms in Vaping

A study recently concluded that the oils and chemicals in vape liquid are extremely toxic. The Mayo Clinic has found the toxins released in vape liquid cause chemical fumes and harmful gases to be brought into the respiratory system and can cause chemical burns to the lungs of vape users.

Excessive use of vape products comes with countless side effects. One of the more prominent consequences is nicotine addiction due to the higher levels of nicotine contained in vape products versus traditional cigarettes. Stroke, heart attack, and lung disease are among other common side effects. Additional, less serious, side effects include bloodshot eyes, irritability, and excessive thirst.

What’s Being Done?

The Food and Drug Administration, along with the CDC, have been conducting extensive studies in hopes to connect with the public for solutions to end this vaping epidemic our country is facing. The FDA plans to examine all vape pens for hazardous materials including cutting agents, pesticides, opiates, heavy metals, and toxins so that health officials can warn consumers of the dangerous side effects of vaping.
