Popular e-cigarette and vaping devices, like Juul, have saturated the market.

Studies now show e-cigarettes and vape pens expose users to dangerous health risks.

E-Cigarette or Juul User? You Could Have a Case!

Popular e-cigarette and vaping devices, like Juul, have saturated the market due to their sleek shape and variety of flavors. Once thought of as a better alternative to smoking cigarettes, studies now show e-cigarettes and vape pens expose users to dangerous health risks.

Who Can File an E-Cigarette Lawsuit?

You may be entitled to file a lawsuit if you or someone you know has used e-cigarettes, vape pens or Juul products for more than six months and suffer from any of the following:

  • Addiction to nicotine
  • Reactive airway disease
  • “Popcorn” lung
  • Bronchitis
  • Pneumonitis
  • Ischemic stroke
  • Cardiovascular injuries (M.I., atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease)

If you’ve ever used an e-cigarette, vape pen or Juul product for any amount of time and suffer from any of the following:

  • Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome
  • Pulmonary edema
  • Bronchiolitis obliterans (airway scarring)
  • Chemical pneumonia
  • Pulmonary fibrosis

Have You or Your Child Become Addicted to Vaping or Juul?

Generally, e-cigarettes contain a lower dose of nicotine than cigarettes, ranging from 6 to 30 milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of liquid. Juul, however, contains a much higher concentration – 59 milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of liquid.

According to Juul Labs, one Juul pod contains about the same amount of nicotine as one pack of cigarettes. Juul does not have a filter so users are exposed to 100% of the nicotine whereas cigarettes lose some of the nicotine in the filter. The high doses of nicotine that Juul users are taking in puts users at risk for injuries and nicotine addiction.

The research study concluded that the high levels of nicotine concentrations found in Juul e-cigarettes are “sufficiently high to be cytotoxic, or toxic to living cells when test in vitro with cultured respiratory system cells.”

Juul and Nicotine Addiction in Teens

E-cigarettes, vape pens and Juul are marketed to teens and young adults, featuring candy-like flavors and sleek designs that are intended to hide the products from adults. Because of this, Juul is the most common form of nicotine delivery among teens and young adults in the United States.

In December 2018, a report titled “Behind the Explosive Growth of Juul” was released by the non-profit Truth Initiative. The report breaks down the scary truth of Juul use among teens and young adults.

Here are some of the key findings from the report:

  • 56% of teens and young adults who ever used Juul or an e-cigarette were under 18 years old when they first tried vaping
  • 16x greater odds that a teen between 15 and 17 years old uses Juul compared to 25 to 34 year olds
  • Between July 2017 and October 2018, there was a 400% increase in the number of young adults between 18 and 21 years old who have used Juul
  • 25% of young Juul users surveyed believe it is less dangerous
  • 63% of 15 to 24 year olds surveyed were unaware Juul contains nicotine

E-cigarettes, vape pens and Juul are becoming an epidemic amongst the nations’ youth. The safety of our youth and all users should be of the utmost priority, not these companies’ profits. The time to hold these corporations responsible is now.

The Serious Side Effects of E-Cigarettes, Vape Pens and Juul

It’s important that consumers are aware of the dangerous side effects of e-cigarettes, vape pens and Juul products. These devices can cause serious damage to the lungs and respiratory system as well as other bodily functions. Health conditions can include the following:

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) – an obstructive lung disease that triggers respiratory complications. Smoking is the number one cause of COPD, but e-cigarettes, vape pens and Juul have become a risk factor. Symptoms can include shortness of breath, coughing, and worsening difficulty breathing through normal everyday activities. Sometimes, people will experience chest tightness, wheezing, leg swelling and bulging neck veins. COPD is a progressive disease that will worsen over time.
  • Pneumonia – a serious infection that often results in hospitalization, and may also be life-threatening. Vaping can increase the risk of pneumococcal bacteria that sticks to the cells that line the nasal passage and airways.
  • Heart Attack – research found that daily e-cigarette and vape use doubles the risk of heart attack compared to those who have never vaped before. Vaping may severely weaken an individual’s heart function and can accelerate the aging of arteries and the aorta. Heart attacks have been reported in healthy teens and young adults following the use of e-cigarettes, vape pens and Juul products.
  • Seizure – In August 2019, the FDA issued a safety announcement about the potential link between vaping and seizures, indicating that the agency identified at least 127 reports of seizures over the last decade.
  • Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis – Also known as bagpipe lung. Symptoms frequently include a flu-like illness, chills, muscle and joint pain, coughing, headaches, weight loss, fatigue, lung fibrosis and club fingers and toes. Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis is diagnosed through blood tests, chest x-rays and lung function tests and can be defined as acute, subacute and chronic. Permanent damage might occur with prolonged exposure to e-cigarettes, vape pens and Juul products.
  • Eosinophilic Pneumonia – a serious lung condition that usually results in the need for hospitalization in an ICU typically requiring respiratory support with intubation or mechanical ventilation. This potential condition arises when white blood cells build up in the lungs, disrupting their normal operation. Symptoms usually include coughing, respiratory problems, fevers, and night sweats. Diagnosis is made through blood count tests, chest x-rays and CT scans as well as a biopsy.

FDA States Juul is Illegally Marketed

The FDA has issues a warning letter to Juul Labs in which they stated “FDA has determined that JUUL adulterated its products under section 902(8) of the FD&C Act (21 U.S.C. § 387b(8)) by selling or distributing them as modified risk tobacco products without an FDA order in effect that permits such sale or distribution.

In the letter, the FDA shares evidence from a recent hearing in which Juul is accused of falsely labeling and marketing their products as “99% safer” than cigarettes, misleading consumers, especially youth.

The FDA is insisting Juul take all necessary actions to bring their products into compliance stating, “It is your responsibility to ensure that your tobacco products, all related labeling and advertising, and all other activities by JUUL directed to consumers, such as in any media in which you advertise and any retail establishments, comply with each applicable provision of the FD&C Act and FDA’s implementing regulations. Failure to ensure compliance with the FD&C Act may result in FDA initiating further action, including, but not limited to, civil money penalties, seizure, and/or injunction. Please note that any adulterated and misbranded tobacco products offered for import into the United States are subject to detention and refusal of admission.”
