Zinbryta reported to cause Encephalitis
Zinbryta is a prescription drug manufactured by AbbVie and Biogen that is prescribed for relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Unfortunately, there have been multiple reports from people who have taken Zinbryta suffering from severe cases of Encephalitis, which results in inflammation of the brain.
There have been 12 specific cases of brain inflammation reported after the use of Zinbryta. Three of these cases resulted in death forcing the European Medicines Agency to suggest a recall of the product after marketing Zinbryta since May in 2016.
The FDA is now stepping in to manage the withdrawal of Zinbryta from the United States market. AbbVie and Biogen have announced a worldwide withdrawal of the drug.
“Given the nature and complexity of adverse events being reported, characterizing the evolving benefit/risk profile of ZINBRYTA will not be possible going forward given the limited number of patients being treated. Therefore, Biogen and AbbVie believe it is in the best interest of patients to voluntarily withdraw worldwide marketing authorizations for ZINBRYTA.”
Symptoms of brain inflammation, or Encephalitis include:
-
- Flu-like symptoms
- Headaches
- Confusion
- Fever
- Fatigue and weakness
- Muscle aches and weakness
Contact your doctor immediately if you are experiencing any of these symptoms after taking Zinbryta for Multiple Sclerosis.
Multiple sclerosis is a disease that disrupts communication between the body and the brain. MS attacks nerve endings causing a large number of possible symptoms from cramping, stiff, and weakness of the muscles to slurred speech and sexual dysfunction.
MS is already a cause for terrible symptoms that can be detrimental to the quality of life. There is no reason for a prescription drug intended for relief to cause even more complications.
