Cell Phones Are Blamed For Many Kentucky Car Accidents
Next time you are at a stop sign or red light look around you. Chances are that many of the other drivers you will see will be talking on their cell phones. Maybe you are someone who consistently using a cell phone while behind the wheel and if so, you are not alone. One study by the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association found that over 254 million people owned cell phones as of February 2008. That study was two years ago – imagine how high that number is today!
In Kentucky, drivers are allowed to use handheld cell phone devices, with the exception of bus drivers. However, the Kentucky lawmakers just passed a bill to ban texting while driving. Rep. Keith Hall, D-Phelps, who had originally opposed the texting ban, because he said that it infringed on individuals’ rights, had a change of heart. His opinion changed after his wife was involved in a Frankfort car accident that occurred after she reached down to answer a ringing cell phone.
According to Hall, “It was an epiphany, almost. These things can happen in the blink of an eye. After what happened to my wife, who was not texting, who just looked down at her cell phone ringing, I decided we’ve got to put protections in place.”
There are many dangers associated with cell phones, besides the obvious of looking down to dial. Drivers can get so engrossed in their conversations that they are not able to fully concentrate on the road. Studies have found that cell phones impair drivers’ ability to respond to hazards. Since there is no handheld device ban in Kentucky, if a driver is not using a headset, that means he or she is most likely driving with only one hand on the wheel.
