Kentucky Lawsuits Filed Over Toyota’s Defective Accelerator Pedal

The news has made national headlines, and why wouldn’t it? Toyota Motor made an unprecedented decision to halt production of many of its vehicles and stop sales.  This move was made after a recall involving millions of Toyota vehicles.

There had been numerous reports of accelerator pedals becoming jammed. Several deaths were believed to have been caused by this major auto defect. The problem was linked to a friction device in the assembly that is designed to give the right pedal “feel” by adding resistance. As the accelerator pedals became worn, there was a risk of the pedals getting stuck and not operating smoothly. This auto defect could result in a deadly car wreck.

On Friday, February 5, 2010, the president of Toyota Motor, Akio Toyota, apologized for defects that have caused the auto manufacturer to recall its vehicles. He said that the company has created a new taskforce charged with lifting quality standards.

ABC News has stated that federal investigators are looking into reports involving Toyota vehicles.  The article, titled, Toyota Declares Its Acceleration Problem Fixed, says that “according to a Department of Transportation official, while investigators say they have no evidence so far, they continue to pursue reports from Toyota owners that some kind of electronic malfunction or computer glitch may also be involved.”

Two Northern Kentucky Women Suing Toyota Over Accidents

Several lawsuits have already been filed against Toyota Motor. Two northern Kentucky women have filed suit in U.S. District Court in Covington, seeking class-action status and unspecified damages.  The two women, Debra Poynter of Boone County and Tina Preedom of Grant County, are claiming that their defective Toyota vehicles suddenly accelerated, causing them to crash and sustain injuries.
